HOW GOOD IS YOUR WARD’S ENGLISH? Can your ward speak and write English fluently and accurately? In today’s knowledge-based society, excellence in English is a great, truly sustainable personal competitive advantage. Those with higher power of expression in English make great successful careers. India dominates world wide in computer software because of its engineers are proficient in English. The sudden explosion of information resources could be managed ably and productively only with better language skills. No wonder, excellence in English is as important as accessibility to information resources, internet, CD ROMs, encyclopedia, books, etc. Merely knowing a lot of things as information is not enough. ‘Information’ is different and ‘Knowledge’ is different. One must be able to derive Knowledge out of information, manipulate it to derive insights and express them effectively as and when required. Lot of information is not enough to compete effectively. Having a huge library at home does not make anyone expert. Very few actually have higher command over English. Leadership goes to them who are excellent communicators. Many excel in their functional knowledge but are found to be poor communicators. No wonder, many highly qualified professionals have to lose vital career opportunities for lack of excellence in English. Rather helplessly, they keep complaining that it is because of English they lagged behind. Sadly, they do nothing about it. The problem lies in not starting early to improve their spoken and written communication skills in English. Excellence in English does mean speaking and writing fluently and accurately in English. The importance of English as the language of knowledge and international communication need not be explained. As per a recent survey by the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (now EFL University), Hyderabad, not more than 5% of people in India can handle text in English. English-literate population has become an asset for our country. Human resource skilled in English is a definite competitive advantage of India vis-à-vis other countries like China, Japan, Germany, Russia and others. Realising this, China has taken up teaching of English on war footing. To take Mr. Azim Premji of Wipro and Mr. Nararayan Murthy of Infosys seriously, China will leave us behind in producing more software professionals very soon. They now understand what kept them lagging behind in IT technologies. English is the mother tongue of the future. So, ‘How is your ward’s English?’ is a serious question for you. Think it over.
