Lord Macaulay Institute of English

The story of English in India begins with Lord Macaulay (Thomas Babington Macaulay) and Macaulay's Minute on Indian Education.

On 2nd February 1934 he wrote the famous historical document ‘The Minute’ that was destined to change the lives of millions of Indians then and over one and a half billion people thereafter. It was this historical ‘Minute of Lord Macaulay’ that gave English to India.

His historic Minute was accepted by Lord Bentinck, the then Governor General of India and thus began English education in India.

EnglishFountain has founded ‘Lord Macaulay Institute of English’ in his memory.

We as Indians owe a debt of gratitude to Lord Macaulay for it was his struggle that gave us the English education in India. Read his story in an article by Mr. Prakash Almeida, Director, EnglishFountain.
